To use insurance or not to use insurance? That is the question…
I utilize a limited insurance Model, here are the reasons why:
The Benefits of Self Pay
Personalized Attention:
By choosing a primarily self-pay model, I’m able to keep my caseload smaller, which allows me to dedicate more time and attention to each client. This means I can focus fully on your unique needs and tailor your treatment to ensure that you receive thorough and personalized care.
Avoiding Complications:
Insurance can sometimes complicate the therapeutic process. For example, insurance companies may demand money back for services already provided (known as clawbacks), leading to surprise costs for you. By limiting the number of insurances I accept, we can avoid these financial surprises, making the payment process simpler and more predictable.
Protecting Your Privacy:
When working with me as an out-of-network provider, your privacy is better protected. Unlike in-network providers who are required to submit a diagnosis to insurance companies, your treatment remains confidential unless you choose to share it. This keeps your diagnosis off permanent medical records, protecting your personal information, future insurance coverage, and premium rates from potential exposure.
Control Over Your Treatment:
A limited insurance model gives you more control over your care. You can choose to work with a therapist that feels right for you without needing a referral or approval from an insurance company. Together, we determine the type and duration of treatment based on your needs, without outside interference. This approach ensures your care is fully tailored to you.
The Drawbacks of Using Insurance
Limited Treatment Options:
When using insurance, the number of sessions and types of treatment available may be restricted by the insurance company. This can sometimes prevent you from receiving the full care you need to address your concerns effectively.
Reduced Privacy:
In-network providers are required to submit a diagnosis for insurance reimbursement, which becomes part of your permanent medical record. This could potentially affect your future insurance coverage and premium rates.
Potential Financial Surprises:
Insurance can sometimes lead to unexpected costs, like clawbacks, where the company demands money back for services already provided. This can result in surprise bills that may be hard to manage.
Accessibility and Flexibility
While I primarily follow a self-pay model, I have chosen to stay on one insurance panel to make my services more accessible. Insurance determines the rate I get paid, not me. I am not allowed to charge you the difference between what they pay, and what I need to charge to cover services. Therefore, when I take insurance, from a business standpoint, it is similar to offering a sliding scale. I can still provide quality services for clients who might otherwise find therapy unaffordable.
